A Glass A Day Keeps The Doctor Away
There is endless researched evidence that links a variety of health benefits with moderate wine drinking, but this study tops it off- with room for another glass. Wine Spectator recently reported in “Can Drinking Wine Prevent Depression?”, on a Spanish study that found a positive correlation between wine consumption and lower incidences of depression.
A team of Spain’s leading medical specialists analyzed health data from 5,505 men and women who participated in a PREDIMED study over the course of seven years. The study sought to determine the effects of a Mediterranean diet when linked to heart disease and mental health. Over the course of the seven-year observation, researchers analyzed those who were clinically diagnosed with depression and their alcoholic consumption. They found that those who practiced moderate alcohol intake, about one serving a day, were 28 percent less likely to develop depression, and those who consumed between two and seven glasses a week yielded a 32 percent lower rate of depression.
The Spanish researchers posit a couple of different arguments for these results. The most scientifically telling, however, is that resveratrol- the antioxidant compound found in the skins and seeds of grapes, has neuroprotective qualities that are applied to the hippocampus. As prior health studies widely suggest, the hippocampus is likely to play a role in the development of severe depression, leaving the scientist to conclude that this “may prevent moderate wine drinkers from developing depression”. Who can afford not to enjoy a glass to their health!
