Don’t Let the Rosé Petals Wilt Before Enjoying this Trendy Wine!
Despite having a reputation as a wine for entry-level drinkers, rosé is rising in the ranks of consumer popularity and drawing attention away from the most well-liked red and white wines. While rosé’s light taste and refreshing finish is ideal for settling into the slower pace of a relaxed summer’s day, we think this wine, once thought of as exclusively seasonal, extends beyond the approaching spring and summer seasons. And we’re not the only ones who think so.
Recently, rosé wines have experienced such rapid growth in sales that retailers are designating a “Rosé” section apart from other varieties in order to meet its year-round demand. With imports booming by 26% in 2011, sales in volume and revenue have continued to make giant strides in the two years thereafter. In just the past eight years, rosé production has increased by 13% worldwide, according to the Conseil Interprofessionnel des Vins de Provence, and has gained substantial foothold of the market in overall wine production, accounting for 10% stake in terms of volume, overall value, consumption in various countries and traded quantities in the international market.
Although some folks associate rosé with cheap wine coolers or even boxed wine, this reputation is being dispelled thanks to wine novices and veterans of the industry. Wine novices have a palate for the sweeter wines, like Moscato and Zinfindel, while veterans are realizing that rosé is not the same sugary dessert wine it was known for being years ago. These younger drinkers, specifically, are a key segment contributing to skyrocketing sales. This is because younger generations find rosé’s fruitier flavor to be a gentler way of introducing wine to developing palates. But wine novices are not the only group to appreciate rosé. Experts in the business, like French wine critic Thierry Desseauve, note that more complex production methods have evolved from the past 10 years, when rosé was deemed a spirit not to be taken as seriously as red or white.
Need another reason why everyone is just catching on to the brilliance of this red/white blend? For one, its flavors are versatile and can be paired with unlimited types of cuisine, especially seafood and lighter meats. Second, as a cool, light wine, drinking rosé doesn’t require the specific set of tasting rules/rituals that are common with red wine drinking. Therefore, it’s a less intimidating option when unsure of what to choose on a date or special occasion, yet it serves as an overall crowd-pleaser. As recent attention to rosé’s trending popularity has coerced innovations in methods of production, this means taste buds will experience nothing short of spectacular.
