ICYMI: A Modern Man’s Mission to Turn Wine into Water
Everyone is familiar with the biblical account of how Jesus miraculously turned water into wine. But check out how one man is making miracles of his own by turning wine into water. In his fascinating interview with CNN, Don Hendley describes why access to clean water is so important and what his organization is doing to help.
As the world tries to solve the ongoing global water crisis, Don Hendley has made it his life’s goal to give those less fortunate the access to clean drinking water. And he’s doing so by the way of wine.
Doc Hendley’s nonprofit organization, Wine to Water, sets up sustainable water filtration and sanitation systems in distraught regions that lack clean water access. Through hosting benefit wine events, such as wine tastings, to fundraise for its projects, the organization has been able to distribute water filters and install wells for over 150,000 people in 17 countries—and it shows no signs of slowing down.
As wine is a symbol of fortune in wealthier countries, the organization believes in empowering those fortunate enough with the ability to give the most essential element of life to those who lack clean water access.
In his recent interview, the philanthropist says that in the Western hemisphere, it is hard for people to rally behind a cause that they cannot empathize with. “We wash our cars; we water our lawn. We just can’t imagine what it’s like to not have access to water”.
He is out to change that mindset. Most recently, he and his team have begun water filtration projects in Syria and the Philippines to alleviate the burden for those recently struck by war and natural disaster. In Syria, they’ve set up Sawyer filters in displacement camps where if properly maintained, lasts 10 years and filters 250 gallons of water every day.
