Rutherford Bench in Napa – On Location
We are now in the process of bottling the Mira 2010 Cabernet and grape sampling our 2012 Cabernet out of Rutherford Bench vineyard in Napa. We wanted to take you on location during this exciting step in the winemaking process and tell you what makes Rutherford bench so unique, and as a result, our Cabernet so delicious.
Since the 1800s, Rutherford has produced some of the world’s greatest Cabernet Sauvignons. Set in the afternoon shadows of the Mayacamas Mountains and sandwiched between Oakville and St. Helena, Rutherford is widely regarded as the sweet spot for Cabernet Sauvignon in Napa Valley. Rutherford’s slightly warmer climate than its neighboring vineyards makes it perfect for growing Cabernet Sauvignon and bringing out the subtle sensuality that you find in Mira’s.
Near the valley walls, the Rutherford terrain is composed of deep, well-drained soils known as the Rutherford Bench. Arguably one of the finest sub-appellations for growing Cabernet Sauvignon, the Rutherford Bench is recognized throughout the world for its complex, distinctive wines. The wines from this benchland site consistently deliver flavors of tobacco/cigar box, silky tannins and a supple palate texture often referred to as “Rutherford Dust,” the signature of the area.
The next time you are in Napa Valley plan to stop and explore the Rutherford Bench wineries, we would be delighted to show you around and let you see how the “dust” truly makes for a smooth, rich, elegant and mystical Cabernet.
