Ready for a Picnic? Let us help you pick the Wine!

Now that the weather is finally beginning to change, people can once again enjoy the outdoors and all it has to offer. Spring weather (not to mention Mothers Day, Memorial Day & graduations) is the perfect time to plan a picnic, and for that we have some wine suggestions to help you can get the most out of your picnic.

Because picnics tend to utilize lighter foods such as salads, cheeses and fruits, the wine paired with them needs to complement that. Save the heavier, bolder wines for barbecues!

Martin D. Redmond, Enofylz wine blogger, believes that a great picnic wine is three things: light and refreshing, easily matched with different foods and affordable.  Below are some of Redmond’s top picks to make your picnic a success!

Rosè, such as Mira’s 2001 Rosè, because it possesses the light crispness of white wines blended with the body and flavors of red wines.

A light, un-oaked Chardonnay, such as Mira’s 2011 Chardonnay, pairs well with a wide variety of foods because it does not overwhelm the food as an oaked white would.

Sauvignon Blanc, such as Mira’s 2010 Sauvignon Blanc, is another popular white wine that is just as fresh and crisp. An easy match for picnic favorite such as goat cheese, this citrusy white is sure to please.

Pinot Noir, such as Mira’s 94 point 2010 Pinot Noir (Wine Enthusiast) also shows a versatility with food pairings due to it’s delicate balance. Redmond recommends it be chilled for 10-15 minutes to get the most out of what it has to offer your taste buds.

Whatever your favorite wine or picnic food, there are many, many choices available to add a little something extra to an ordinary picnic. Use this list as a starting point, and get creative!
